Question:

Question: Is there a troubleshooting guide for further technical help? - by Kanex on 05/18/2010
Answer: Yes. Please visit www.kanexlive.com/blog/support/. It will provide a detailed list on how to connect and special set-up instructions.

Question: Will the adapter work in sleep mode or with my Macbook closed? - by Kanex on 05/18/2010
Answer: The adapter will not allow your Mac to enter sleep mode unless the USB port on the adapter is disconnected. Refer to your Mac settings for instructions on how to turn sleep mode off when display is in clamshell.

Question: Will the audio work without connecting the Toslink connector? - by Kanex on 05/18/2010
Answer: No. Unlike the iAdapt 20, this adapter does not pass audio through USB. The Toslink must be connected for audio output.

Question: Will it work if my TV does not go up to 1080p? - by Kanex on 05/18/2010
Answer: Yes. The adapter will automatically detect and switch to the highest resolution your display supports.

Question: How do I get rid of the black border around the edge of the TV display? - by Kanex on 05/18/2010
Answer: You will want to turn on the overscan function. To do so, go to system preferences, then “displays”, followed by “arrangements” and tick the “overscan” button. This will allow the image to output at full screen. Learn more about this feature on our blog at http://www.kanexlive.com/blog/2009/10/over-and-under-scan-hdtv-1080p.html

Question: My adapter isn’t working properly and the red light is off. Is there a way to reset it? - by Kanex on 05/18/2010
Answer: To obtain the best results, follow the enclosed instructions for set-up - Connect the HDMI cable first to sync to source followed by connecting the mini jack for audio, the Mini DisplayPort for video, and lastly the USB for power. All ports must be plugged in before you power “on” the adapter.

I don't like how everytime I use it I have to go to my settings on my Mac book pro and adjust my graphics processor and resolution settings but overall it works as intended.

Tough the iAdapt 5.1 is more expansive than the others adapters, I really recommend it to everybody who has a MacBook Pro without audio output thru HDMI.

Mac Mini connected to a Mitsubishi 65" DLP HDTV via a Denon A/V Receiver The Kanex connector works flawlessly, converting the digital audio out and mini Display port to a single HDMI feed into the Denon Receiver. There are some minor 'overscan' issues, where the screen is slightly larger than the viewable area on the DLP set, but these can be corrected by adjusting the horiz/vertical settings on the Mitsubishi itself. This is coming from Mac OSX and not from the connector. No complaints here! A product that works great, just as advertised! Highly recommended!

I originally used this adapter with a late 2009 Mac Mini, and now use it with the new aluminum body mini. In each case the mini functions as a media server and is connected to an HDTV through a Panasonic receiver. I mostly run Plex to deliver content. Without the adapter the mini constantly reverts to onboard audio and "loses" the display settings as the receiver is turned on or off. With the adapter the mini works perfectly, constantly holding the audio and video settings. Before i bought this adapter i found the set-up was a constant annoyance, requiring frequent attention to make it all work as it should. Since adding the iAdapt 51, the entire set-up just plain works, with no input from me.

MacMini (2009), LaCie d2 BluRay Pro, Sony STR-DA2400ES, EPSON 5000 LCD projector Worked as advertised without any problem (sound and video) from Mac OSX 10.6 with just one HDMI cable to the Sony Receiver. However, it cannot play protected original BluRay. You need to work under Bootcamp, Windows XP (or other) and absolutely add AnyDVD to remove the protection of perfectly legally bought BluRay disks. Then you do no longer get the error message. I had secretly hoped this adapter would resolve that problem. The problem is the display output which is not HDCP compatible. But maybe this a mac problem after all?

I'm using the Kanex iAdapt 51 to connect a Mac Mini (last pre-unibody model) to a large LCD television (1080p). I use the Mac Mini as a home theater system, primarily running Boxee. The picture quality and sound are excellent, I'm able to flawlessly display HD content at the native resolution of my television. This cable is the nerve center of my home theater, I bought it and waited for it to arrive before I even got the Mac Mini. I hoped it would be an elegant way to build a home theater without multiple adapters, a tuner, or any other equipment to handle the combination of sound and video, and I haven't been disappointed. Thanks to Kanex, I was able to build exactly the system I'd imagined. The only very small oddity I noticed was that I had to change the screen resolution before the sound would work, but only when first connecting the unit. That's five minutes of trial and error up front, and hours and hours of enjoyment, so it's definitely five stars in my book.

I bought this adapter to allow me to view ripped DVD files on my HDTV. The computer is about twenty feet away from the TV, so I ran an HDMI patch cable under the floor and terminated it with two nice HDMI wall plates. I use a 2009 MacBook Pro to the Kanex adapter to a short HDMI cable to the wall plate, then the other wall plate HDMI port runs to a Denon AVR1910 receiver to a Samsung 46" LED TV. The setup is very easy and pretty clean, though it would be nice if the Kanex adapter were just a little more compact. On my computer, all three of the needed ports (audio, USB, and mini DisplayPort) are within a two inches of each other, so to have a lot of cable running to the adapter seems a little much, but other computers might need more play in the cables. It's a great way to get an HD picture out to your TV. I look forward to putting a Mac Mini with built-in HDMI down with my receiver eventually, but until then, this is a great way to go.

I use a 2009 15" Macbook Pro 2.8 Ghz. I use this product for a few different tasks. The main use of the product is for plugging in to various HDTVs, from my 46" Samsung OLED to a smaller Panasonic Viera 27" LCD. The colour, picture and sound are amazing. Setup is quick and easy and I've never had a problem with it. I don't use it to mirror the screen, just as an extension to the screen. On the TVs, I watch all types of media including high-definition Blu Ray disc rips and the picture never stutters or slows down like it has with other devices. I also sometimes connect my computer to monitors to use in a dual screen setup, like when using Photoshop or a few music DAWs. Again, there are only glowing things to say about this. Pros are that it works every single time with no issue whatsoever. Cons, of which don't know if they can be helped: slight overscan on tvs with FULL aspect selected so edges aren't always visible. Native leaves the screen with black bars around all sides. Also, the lack of driver support, so I cannot connect the Kanex device to any monitors when using Bootcamp running Windows XP, which would be incredibly nice to have.

Pros- Does exactly what it said it would do.. great product. Great picture. Good Audio. Extremely easy setup. Decent price. Cons- (Being very picky here but only thing I can really think of) Awkward connecting/disconnecting 3 plugs when connecting to TV. Obviously would be nice if it was just one simple cord, but it's really nothing at all. I had been anticipating this item for quite a while. (The delays were killing me!) I saw monoprice's alternative solution, however opted with Kanex because it seemed more logically designed. [Monoprice's minidisplayport blocked a USB port connection]. Overall, very satisfied with the product. Always makes my technologically-inept friends/family say "oooh" and "ahhh." Keep up the good work.

It is generally just a plug and play adapter, I've only had to mess with the settings once. Great product and very fast support response. I use Kanex iAdapt 51 with an Apple Mac Mini 2010 (before HDMI was built in) and have it connected to a Panasonic TH-42PZ90 TV. After playing around with the display settings it produced 1080p mode. Good picture and audio quality.

1. MacBook Pro - 2009 2. We don't have a cable box in our bedroom so I use the cable to connect my MacBook Pro to the TV so we can watch shows and movies (both online and saved files). Also great for bringing to friends' houses so we can watch content from my MacBook and not lose quality due to poor cable connections. Pros - Works as advertised. I couldn't find anything else that would run from my MacBook to HDMI. Cons - The MacBook heats up after a while. Not sure if this is because it's pushing everything though the cable to the TV or if it's just because it's playing video.

Using it with the last generation Mac Mini to use my 46" television as a monitor and for playing multimedia. Product is great, though gets very warm under use, and the cable connection is not always snug. On occasion, video or audio goes out, requiring me to unplug the device and plug it back in.

If I stop a video (or it ends normally) and don't start within about 1 minute it produces no sound. Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable fixes the problem.

If I adjust it, it doesn't fit the entire tv viewing area. My only complaint is #3, which prevents me from giving you 5 stars.

I'm using my Kanex adapter with my late 2008 MacBook Pro. I use it to hook my laptop to my tv for movies. I guess the best thing is that I haven't had a single problem with the adapter, never. In my use the the adapters cables are a bit too long, but that doesn't really matter much.

I use it at home to connect my 13" MacBook Pro to a TV, for watching movies most of the time, but also to rehearse for presentations. The cons is that it takes up most ports available and also it's cumbersome to connect a pendrive to the remaining USB port when the device is attached. The pros are many. I'm satisfied with the product and would indicate it to others.

The cords are cumbersome - would be nice to have wireless choice The white box gets very hot - Hope this does not impact the life of the product. I would like to be notified of updates in hardware and software for the product. Directions were unclear as to how to make it work. I figured it out.

The contrast ratio and fitting the screen just aren't all there, although the over all product works well, and I am sure this ratio and setup are more to do with the screen and tv than the product itself.

Currently use with a MacBook Pro 2009 to connect to a Panasonic TH-42PZ70BA especially to watch online TV on a large screen. Works very well indeed. My only complaint might be that the cables could be significantly longer (6ft - 12ft) as it is difficult to sit far enough away from the large screen and still operate the laptop keyboard. Nonetheless an excellent piece of equipment.

1. I use the adapter to connect my new MacBook Pro to my HDTV through my receiver to either watch movies (downloaded to my NAS) or stream music through FrontRow. Occasionally I will use my TV as a secondary monitor as well. 2. It is simple and just worked. No issues so far which is what I expect. 3. Price is a little more than I would have liked to pay. Would like 7.1 audio if there weren't any other hardware limitations. 4. All-in-all, I am happy with the product and have recommended it to others after buying it on a recommendation from a friend.

I was using this with my 2009, 21.5" iMac. It was set up connected to my Yamaha receiver and then out to my projector in my living room. This setup was so sweet, when it was first set up, i was so excited to get it all up and running. But then, after a month or so, the adapter decided to stop working once in a while. and then it would work, and then it would not work, so, Kanex let me return it for a refund, and buy a new one. well, all was good at first once again.. but then it happened all over again. I would not recommend this product, however if you do decide to try it out, Kanex customer service was very accommodating and did what they had to to please me, the consumer. Would give 1 star, but gave an extra star for good customer service.

Unfortunately, it uses the USB only to power the device and requires separate audio and video connections to the MacBook in addition to the USB. My search continues for a good audio+video USB+mini-display port to HDMI adapter. I returned this less than useful product.
